At Securex, we believe security isn’t just about safeguarding assets but protecting people, dignity, and livelihoods. But for millions of widows in Kenya, security is a distant reality. More than 8 million women have lost their partners, and with that loss often comes economic devastation, social isolation, and battles for the very homes they once built with their spouses. Shockingly, 80% of widows in Kenya do not have legal ownership of their late husband’s assets. Many live on less than $1.25 a day, struggling to feed their children, facing discrimination, and often becoming invisible to the systems meant to protect them.
We refuse to let them be forgotten.
That’s why we’ve partnered with Nyanam Widows Rising and the visionaries behind the photo-documentary project The Challenge of Being a Widow, Mercedes Candelas Pérez & Eric Borremans, to amplify their voices and bring real, lasting change.
A Life Shattered, A Fight for Dignity

In the Luo and Maasai communities, where widows are particularly vulnerable, The Challenge of Being a Widow shines a light on the silent battles these women fight daily. Property grabbing, expulsion from their homes, and the weight of raising children alone—these are not just statistics but daily realities for so many. Through this powerful documentary, we’re not just telling their stories but pushing for action, mind-set change, and long-term protections that ensure no woman is left behind.
From Old Uniforms to New Beginnings
Security uniforms are designed to protect. Now, they’re doing more than that—they’re rebuilding lives.
Through our collaboration with Nyanam Widows Rising, we are repurposing thousands of retired Securex security uniforms, transforming them into school bags, pouches, and purses. This initiative is more than just recycling—it’s an opportunity for over 200 widows to regain financial independence. Their skilled hands breathe new life into discarded fabric, turning it into something beautiful and meaningful.
But this impact doesn’t stop with them. These school bags are then gifted to underprivileged children who lack access to basic school supplies, helping reduce dropout rates in communities where 37% of children leave school due to financial hardship. Education is power, and by equipping these young minds, we are securing a future where no child is forced to choose between survival and schooling.
Why This Matters
This initiative isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about humanity. It’s about giving widows the respect, recognition, and resources they deserve. It’s about ensuring their children can dream beyond their circumstances. And it’s about proving that even in the face of loss, there is resilience, strength, and an unbreakable will to rise again.
At Securex, we don’t just believe in security—we believe in empowerment, inclusion, and real change. Because true security isn’t just about protecting what you have; it’s about creating a future where everyone has the chance to thrive.
This is security. This is dignity. This is the future we’re building.
